Why Your Google Ads Get Clicks but No Conversions

If you are getting Google Ads clicks but no conversions, the cause may be unsuitable searches, irrelevant query matches, missing measurement, an unclear offer or a difficult enquiry process. Sometimes enquiries are arriving, but your account is not recording them.

Before changing bids or increasing spending, establish where the problem starts. More traffic will not repair a failed form or make an irrelevant search suitable for your business.

This guide focuses on lead-generation campaigns, particularly Google Search Ads. Follow the checks in order to investigate the journey from search to advertisement, landing page and enquiry.

1.Check Whether Enquiries Are Missing or Unrecorded

Start with your business records. Review incoming calls, form submissions, appointment requests and your customer relationship management (CRM) system. Compare those records with the lead conversions reported in Google Ads.

What you find Possible explanation First check
No enquiries and no recorded lead conversions Unsuitable traffic or a failed enquiry process Test whether an enquiry can be completed
Enquiries exist, but Google Ads shows no lead conversions Another traffic source, missing tracking or incomplete reporting Check lead sources and measurement
Google Ads shows lead conversions, but corresponding enquiries cannot be found Records stored elsewhere, an incorrect event or a delivery failure Identify the measured action and locate its records

Each situation needs a different response. Negative keywords will not repair a booking tool. A landing-page redesign will not correct an event that counts opening a form as submitting it.

Compare Records Using the Same Date Basis

An enquiry received today may relate to an advertisement clicked several days earlier.

Check whether your Google Ads columns report conversions against the ad interaction date or the conversion date. Conversion-time columns can help when comparing advertising reports with enquiry timestamps.

Also check that:

  • Both systems use the same time zone.
  • You are comparing the same enquiry types.
  • Lead sources are recorded where possible.
  • Duplicate submissions are not inflating either count.

Investigate these differences before assuming that tracking is broken.

Test Conversion Tracking With Google Tag Assistant

Google Tag Assistant lets you inspect tags and events while using your website.

  1. Open Google Tag Assistant.
  2. Select Add domain, enter the actual campaign destination URL and select Connect.
  3. In the connected website window, complete a clearly labelled test enquiry.
  4. Return to Tag Assistant and inspect the events and tags associated with the submission.
  5. Check whether the intended conversion tag or event fires after successful completion.
  6. Look for missing events or multiple lead events from one successful submission. Also check whether a lead event fires before the form succeeds.

If your tags are managed through Google Tag Manager, its Preview mode can help inspect which tags fire during each interaction. For GA4-based measurement, DebugView can help inspect the events received.

What the Test Should Establish

  • A visitor can complete the enquiry.
  • The business receives the submission.
  • The intended event fires at the correct step.
  • One successful submission does not produce unintended multiple lead events.

Test whether a failed submission incorrectly triggers the lead event too.

A technical test does not automatically appear as an ad-attributed conversion without an eligible advertising interaction. Use debugging tools to verify event behaviour rather than repeatedly clicking your own advertisement.

For calls, confirm that the advertised number reaches the right business. A phone-button click records an attempt to call, not necessarily a connected or qualified enquiry.

Check What the Campaign Counts as a Conversion

Page views and form openings can provide useful observations, but they are not equivalent to completed enquiries.

For standard goals, primary actions appear in the Conversions column and are used by conversion-based bidding when the campaign uses that goal. Secondary actions normally appear in All conversions for observation. Actions included in custom goals can be used for bidding even when labelled secondary.

If bidding is using minor interactions rather than the campaign’s intended lead action, review the goals and document any correction.

2. Check Timing and Investigate Sudden Declines

A visitor may click, compare providers and enquire later. A completed action may also take time to appear in advertising reports.

Distinguish enquiry delay, the time between the click and contacting the business, from reporting delay, the time between completing the action and seeing it in Google Ads.

Use historical delay information where available. Very recent traffic may not yet provide a complete picture.

What to Check When Conversions Stop Suddenly

A campaign that previously generated enquiries needs a different starting point from one that has never recorded them.

Identify when the decline began. Compare that date with:

  • Website releases or redesigns.
  • Form-plugin or booking-tool updates.
  • Changes to destination URLs or redirects.
  • Tag Manager publications or tracking changes.
  • Conversion-goal edits.
  • Campaign targeting or bidding changes.

Use Google Ads Change history for account edits and your website’s release records for site changes.

If enquiries continue but recorded conversions stop, investigate measurement first. If both decline, test the enquiry route and review traffic changes.

Timing is a clue, not proof. Reproduce the suspected failure before deciding what caused it.

3. Examine the Searches Behind Your Spending

Your keyword list describes what you intended to target. The search terms report shows actual searches that triggered advertisements, subject to reporting and privacy limits.

Review queries alongside cost and lead outcomes. Start with those taking a substantial share of the budget.

Example search Likely intent What to assess
washing machine repair near me Find a repair provider Service and location fit
how to fix washing machine drainage Find instructions Whether research traffic fits the campaign
appliance repair technician jobs Find employment Whether recruitment is an objective
washing machine spare parts Buy components Whether the business sells parts

A search can contain your service keyword while expressing a different need.

Separate Research Intent From Unsuitable Intent

Research searches are not automatically irrelevant. Someone comparing repair costs may later contact a provider.

Where qualification is measured, check whether those searches generate qualified enquiries: people requesting an offered service within the area you serve.

Consider excluding research queries when they consistently consume budget without suitable lead outcomes and do not fit the campaign’s purpose.

If relevant research traffic is intentional, assess whether the page answers its questions before requesting an enquiry. An explanation of costs or the assessment process may be more appropriate than an unexplained booking form.

Apply Negative Keywords Carefully

Use an ad-group exclusion for a narrow routing issue. Use a campaign-level exclusion when the search is unsuitable across the campaign.

Review generic lists before applying them. Excluding “cost” could block potential customers comparing prices.

Negative keywords behave differently from ordinary keywords. Synonyms and singular or plural versions may need separate exclusions; casing and misspellings are handled automatically.

Choose the match type deliberately and review subsequent searches for unintended exclusions.

4. Review Who the Campaign Reaches

Check whether visitors are in locations the business can serve.

  • Presence or Interest can include people interested in your target area who are elsewhere.
  • Presence focuses on people likely to be in or regularly in the targeted area.

Choose settings according to your service requirements. Location estimates are not perfectly accurate, so compare settings with actual enquiry locations.

Investigate Device, Network and Scheduling Differences

Finding Investigation Action if confirmed
Mobile traffic produces few enquiries Mobile form and booking tool Repair the failing interaction
Calls arrive outside staffed hours Call handling and callbacks Review coverage or call-focused scheduling
A network segment spends without suitable leads Traffic relevance and measurement Review whether to keep that network enabled

A performance difference identifies where to investigate; it does not establish the cause.

5. Check Message Match, Offer Clarity and Trust

Read the search, advertisement and destination page together. Would the visitor recognise the service they need and understand what to do next?

An advertisement for a specific repair service should lead to a page where that service is easy to find.

Check Whether the Offer Is Clear Enough to Evaluate

A technically working page can still leave important questions unanswered.

Check whether it explains:

  • What the service includes.
  • Which locations or requirements are covered.
  • What happens during an assessment or consultation.
  • How pricing is determined.
  • Any relevant charges or restrictions.
  • What follows an enquiry.

You do not need to publish a fixed price when the service requires assessment. Explain the quotation process instead.

Compare the information available on other relevant providers’ pages. Look for unanswered questions rather than copying their claims or promotions.

Review Evidence Visitors Can Verify

Check whether the page provides appropriate evidence, such as genuine reviews, relevant examples of work, accurate business details and verifiable credentials.

Use only information the business can substantiate. Generic praise or unsupported badges may add little to someone’s decision.

Also assess whether the requested next step fits the visitor’s intent. Someone researching options may need more explanation before sharing contact details.

6. Investigate Where Visitors Abandon the Page

The tracking test checks completion and measurement. This investigation examines where visitors stop progressing.

Build a Measured Enquiry Funnel

In GA4, use Explore → Funnel exploration to examine a sequence such as:

Campaign landing-page visit → form start → successful submission

Define steps using events verified against your actual form. Do not assume an automatically collected form event proves that the business received an enquiry.

Where possible, isolate paid traffic to the relevant destination and compare devices

Observed drop-off What to investigate
Visits rarely progress to form starts Service fit, offer clarity, trust and visibility of the next step
Form starts rarely become successful submissions Required fields, validation errors and submission failures
Successful submissions do not appear in business records Notifications, CRM routing and storage

A funnel shows recorded behaviour. Missing or incorrect events can distort it, and the report alone does not explain why someone left.

Observe Usability Problems

Where appropriately configured, session recordings and heatmaps can provide additional context. Look for repeated attempts to use a button, hesitation around a field or difficulty reaching the booking tool.

Mask personal information and use recording tools according to applicable consent requirements. Treat observations as clues to test, rather than proof of a visitor’s motivation.

Also test the destination on a phone over mobile data. PageSpeed Insights can help identify loading issues, but its score does not replace a complete usability test.

If the landing page needs technical changes, Bixeltek’s professional web design services may be relevant.

7. Trace Enquiries Through Delivery and Follow-Up

Follow a test submission through form storage, email notifications and CRM assignment. Check notification addresses, spam folders and routing rules.

If a record exists but no notification arrives, investigate delivery and confirm that a subsequent test reaches the assigned person.

Record stages such as received, contacted, qualified and booked. Enquiries and bookings are different outcomes; unanswered calls or unavailable appointments can affect what happens after a lead arrives.

A Hypothetical Diagnostic Example

This example illustrates the investigation process. It does not describe a Bixeltek client or claim campaign results.

A repair business serving customers in India receives advertising clicks, but its inbox contains no enquiries.

During testing, the reviewer selects India as the country and enters a correctly formatted 10-digit Indian mobile number in a field intended for the national number. The form rejects it because its validation incorrectly requires 11 digits.

At the same time, the tracking event records pressing Submit as a lead, even though the form returns an error.

Step Finding
Observe the symptom Google Ads records lead events, but corresponding enquiries cannot be found
Test the form A correctly formatted number for the business’s intended customers is rejected
Inspect validation The phone field incorrectly requires 11 digits
Inspect tracking The lead event fires on the button click before submission succeeds
Correct the configuration Repair phone validation and trigger measurement on confirmed submission
Verify A labelled test enquiry reaches the business and produces one intended lead event

This identifies two separate faults: the form blocks an appropriate phone-number format, and tracking counts failed submission attempts.

Accepting a correctly formatted number does not establish that the person is a qualified lead. Qualification still depends on whether they request a service the business offers and can serve.

8. Evaluate Changes Using a Clear Record

Record what changed, when and why. Avoid changing targeting, bids, advertisements and the page simultaneously unless an urgent failure requires it.

Compare similar periods and allow for enquiry delays. Consider relevant traffic volume, spending and lead outcomes before drawing conclusions from a small sample.

Note measurement changes separately. More recorded conversions after a tracking repair do not necessarily mean more actual enquiries
